Top 10 Tracks of 2009
Counting Down my favorite tracks from 2009!
10. Wonderful - Gary Go (Gary Go)
9. My Love - The-Dream ft Mariah Carey (Love vs. Money)
After their success on last year’s #1 hit, “Touch My Body,” The-Dream & Mariah teamed up for a true duet on this track from Dream’s “Love vs. Money” album. It’s a great slice of r&b with a smooth groove that’ll have you bouncing! This should have been promoted better and didn’t fair so well on the charts, but it was in constant rotation for me this year - surpassing most of her Memoirs album. Revisiting the same theme as Brandy & KanYe’s “Talk About Our Love” a few years ago, the pair sing about how they shouldn’t let outside influences affect their relationship.
8. Change - Daniel Merriweather ft Wale (Love & War)
Daniel broke onto the scene a few years ago with the lead vocal for Mark Ronson’s cover of The Smith’s “Stop Me.” Since then, the two have been working on Merriweather’s debut album and early last year “Change” was released. A socially aware track that features a great 8 bars from DC rapper Wale, Ronson’s signature horns paired with Daniel’s smooth vocals make this one not to be missed! So good, in fact, I made it my ringtone for a good chunk of the year!
7. Fences - Phoenix (Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix)
My favorite band broke back into 2009 with their ubiquitous promo single, 1901, that had hipsters everywhere bopping along! Their disco-infused pop/rock was so infectious, it propelled them into the biggest year of their career: from a Grammy-nominated album to a 3-song appearance on SNL, these guys were inescapable! A part of me is sad that they’re no longer my little secret ;( Fences almost didn’t make the album until producer Cassius stepped in and it became one of their most remixed tracks to date! I love the disco swagger of this track... try not to be happy while listening to it!
6. When Love Takes Over - David Guetta ft Kelly Rowland (One Love)
David Guetta has been big on the dance scene for a few years, but has never really achieved much mainstream success. A few summers ago, his track Love Is Gone (ft frequent collaborator Chris Willis) was a pretty big track in NY, but remained largely unheard. Along came Kelly: in desperate need of a creative change after her last r&b album, Ms. Kelly, tanked on the charts (never achieving Beyonce-like success after they left Destiny’s Child), she paired up with Guetta and the song took on a life of it’s own, becoming a bonafide Song Of The Summer. Crank the tune, feel the summer breeze in your hair & boogie!
